The March Of Derivatives Through Times And Markets

The abundance of terms available on the financial market is as scary as it is confusing for the average, uninitiated trader seeking to start making a fortune on their assets. The knowledge of a starting trader who was used to the cozy and familiar confines of the checkout at the local grocery store will turn into a wild rollercoaster ride the moment they step into the crazy world of financial instruments. But the financial devil is not as terrifying as he is made out to be.
Orders, derivatives, contracts, futures, shorts, stops and so on are the terms that threaten starting traders to to shatter dreams and haunt their nightmares, drenching their backs with cold sweat at the sight of ominous Japanese Candles and convoluted geometrical figures on frightening charts. But it is not that horrifying as the theory of virtually every single financial instrument is tightly knit into the fabric of everyday life. The simplest and most common instrument that every single person who has ever watched even a moment of financial news has heard of is the basic derivative.
The derivative is just a fancy name for a contract relying its value on a large variety of instruments on the financial market that are better known as stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, interest rates and other variables. In fact, there are derivatives on virtually anything imaginable and a very simple example can be betting, where the profit of one party to the contract is placed on the outcome of a certain event.

The Long Way

The history of derivative contracts goes back to ancient times. The instrument has come a long way since its primitive form as a verbal agreement between merchants seeking to attract funding for their adventures. One of the oldest known examples is that of Babylonian merchants who concluded risk sharing agreements and received loans for their caravans. The loans could be repaid if the goods were successfully delivered and sold in distant lands. The Templars used a further development of loans as they used to give money to pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land and would later charge interest on the funds. The Conquistadors were no better, as they signed futures contracts with the Spanish Crown and wealthy Spaniards for their ventures into the New World, where the booty and plunder pilfered from the hapless natives would serve as the payoff. The first modern derivative contracts appeared on the London Stock Exchange in the 1830s, and the United States entered them into practice in the 1850s.
Derivatives, mostly the swaps, served as the reason for the 2008 mortgage crisis in the United States as the involvement of counterparty risks simply spiraled out of control.
In the cryptocurrency world, the first derivatives were issued on BTC as Bitcoin futures and options are successfully traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME Group), the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), as well as on a number of cryptocurrency exchanges, in particular, on Binance, BitMex, BitFinex, OKCoin and others.

Types of Derivatives

There are a number of types of derivatives that are available to traders. Most of them operate on the same principles with several differences that are tailored to specific requirements the traders put forward.

Futures Contracts
Futures contracts are some of the most common types of derivatives. A futures contract is an agreement between two parties for the purchase and delivery of some kind of asset at an agreed upon price at some date specified in the future. Futures are traded on exchanges as standardized forms. This type of derivative is usually used by traders to hedge risks or for speculation on prices of various assets. A classic example are speculations on the price of oil, gold or the price of the US dollar or British pound.
The expiration date of the delivery of the asset is not always the date of contract termination, since many derivatives are settled on cash. Basically, the gain or loss in trade is a positive or negative cash flow for the trader. Interest rate futures, stock index futures, and many more are also called cash settled contracts.
Forwards
Forward are the next important kind of derivative and are quite similar to futures, much like most other derivatives. Forward contracts are not traded on exchanges, but on OTC. Under a forward contract, the buyer and seller can customize the terms of the deal, its volume and the settlement process. Counterparty risks, or the risk that one of the parties will not be able to fulfill their obligations are inherent to futures. An important aspect of forwards is that more than two parties can be involved in the contract to offset the risks.
Swaps
Swaps are a derivative under which it is possible to swap one kind of cash flow with another. For example, it is possible to switch from a variable interest rate loan to a fixed interest rate loan, or vice versa. These are very popular for offsetting risks and are extremely useful when dealing with currencies.
Options
Options are agreements between two parties to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined future date for a specified price. Under this type of derivative, the buyer is not obligated to call the contract, while the seller has to either buy or sell the asset if the buyer chooses to exercise the contract. Hence the name. Options are commonly used for hedging or price speculation on assets.

The Echoes On Derivatives

The opinions of market specialists on derivatives vary diametrically as many herald them as the be-all of the market, while others blame them for excessive volatility and other market troubles. Derivatives do have their limitations as they are quite difficult to value. Since the price of derivatives is based on the price of assets, their value is subject to a variety of external factors. The risks for OTC derivatives include counterparty risks that are difficult to predict. The expiration time, the cost of holding the asset, and the interest rates are also factors that affect the value of derivatives. Matching the value of a derivative with the underlying asset is made difficult by this combination of factors. The supply and demand of a derivative can make its value to rise and fall in value even if all other factors, including the price of the asset are kept constant. And this is called speculation.
The most recent criticism was directed at Bitcoin futures, which have caused the value of Bitcoin to jump, but eventually failed to maintain its price in the plus in the long run. The call from every set of lips on the market was that Bitcoin was a bubble and its end was nigh. The failure of Bitcoin futures contracts to have any serious long term effect on the asset’s price can be attributed to the immense news background determining the price of such an asset, once again proving the limitations of derivatives on classical exchanges and their amalgamations on the crypto market.
Zennon Kapron, managing director of Shanghai-based consulting firm Kapronasia said “It is rare that you see something more volatile than Bitcoin, but we found it: Bitcoin futures.”
Since Bitcoin does not have any physical underlying assets, many experts on the market believe that the advent of futures contracts for Bitcoin is not good for the crypto market in the long run. The arrival of institutional investors is supposed to be the panacea the market is waiting for. The lack of any requirements on the ownership of Bitcoins on the part of the seller of the futures contract is considered to be the main drawback hampering the application of derivatives for such assets.

Those siding with the futures on Bitcoin claim that their arrival will help stabilize the market and provide better order execution, thus bringing a more civilized nature of trade to the entire market. Money comes first, then adoption and real usage

I hear it over and over again. "ChainLink could take 2-3 years before real usage comes in. If you are not patient enough, you shouldn't buy"
This is complete bullshit. You can't time the market and tell the perfect buying point. Not the month or year of a bullrun or adoption phase of a specific coin. The big guys like capgemini or whatever are estimating their predictions in 1-2 years. A technology like blockchain and smart contracts with even more spread 3-5 years. (*capgemini stated that real world adoption of smart contracts begins around 2020-2025*).

Ethereum is in now way used by real people or real companys outside of crypto world yet, but had a run from 8$ to 1400$. Is it because they got their product finished? Did they have real world adoption now (not companys forking it or building prototype products)? Do they have x companys doing 10.000 tx a day now? No.
Remember, there is not THE CRYPTO WORLD thats gonna get flooded by the people. You can't convert the masses into a new world. We have to wrap our blockchain stuff into the real world products to get it used by the people. And this takes a huge ton of time. But the money you want to make is a lot earlier there. Starting at the nerdis from 4chan, going over to reddit and twitter into television. The Television point was only reached by bitcoin in end 2017.

So what I actually want to say with this is... ChainLinks bullrun will not come after everything is set up and in clear sight. It will come after certain things are in sight or another big breadcrumb comes. It ignites like a fire. Best example is Ethereum or NANO.

Ethereum was literally dead after the DAO. Lot's of early money sold and dropped Ethereum out of their mind as futuristic super computer. Months later, after bleeding and nothing than some dev updates, price starts to gain in value. Out of nothing. Just speculation or TA. Its rising and rising and just doesnt stop. There was no big news, no partnership and the tech was almost the same as 6 month ago. The price is 95% of the time not correlated to the development or news. It's correlated to emotions after them being ignited.

Take NANO for example. They have an finished product, a DAG based currency which works perfectly since YEARS. You can transact in seconds with no fees. This was possible in early 2017 too, when ethereum had it's run. The tech was there since years, but it started gaining a huge ton in value late 2017 and just had the biggest bull run of all cryptos ever.
August 2017 traded at less then 2 cents. 0.02$. January 2018. 4 months later, it traded at 37$. That's +180.000% gain. The tech didn't really changed. They just published a wallet and started marketing.

That was just a payment coin. No imagine what an network of oracles can do, which can utilized by any blockchain.. Ethereum, Hyperledger, R3. Everything thats going to be used by people and companys to implement smart contracts in their products and processes. Imagine what a network of oracle nodes can do that brings the whole (+96%) banking landscape via PSD2 into the reach of any blockchain platform and smart contracts. They dont have to setup their banking products onto the blockchain platform from scratch and they would never do that. With ChainLink they have a plug and play bridge, with the highest security (trustless, 100% uptime, completely tamperproof) you can imagine.

ChainLink is developing since +3 years. It can explode any time now without having the clear sight of it being used by all the fancys crypto startups. We dont need adoption first to moon. Money comes first, then adoption.
The runup always comes earlier than 90% of people think, and will reach higher than 99% of people think. Thats what happened to the real projects in 2016-2018. Ethereum, Antshares, RaiBlocks which all didn't care about marketing first and just developed the product. ChainLink will move the highest amount of money with a huge ton of collateral out of any of these platforms because it is the bridge for every blockchain and the banking landscape.

Ari Paul is a smart guy. But the video thats going aroung on twitter and discord of him saying ChainLink would'nt be interesting for now because customers are +6 month away is laughable. The best moment to get in is yesterday and he probably knows that.
All the experts in the crypto field liek Nick Szabo, Gavin, Andreas A. are endorsing ChainLink and calling it already the decentralized oracle standard. They would'nt write a single word into their book if it's just some startup which is trying.. Not the meme is calling ChainLink the future standard oracle product.. the blockchain pioneers do.

Cryptocurrencies will change the world, and other thoughts

I'm relatively new to Reddit and no crypto expert. I'm an amateur computer scientist, economist, and investor; I'm a professional risk manager; and I'm all in on Ethereum [EDIT: my only crypto is ETH and I'm very optimistic, but I also hold boring index funds]. Take my opinions with a grain of salt.
TLDR; Cryptocurrencies are great. I have miscellaneous thoughts I want to write down and get your feedback.
The idea of value intrinsic to an information system is bigger than most people realize.
There are many books (one of my favorites is William Bernstein's The Birth of Plenty) that try to identify the factors that drive economic and societal growth. One of the most important growth factors is how quickly we can scale resources. Land can't be scaled at all, and economic growth was very slow when land was the key constraint. The world has transitioned from an economy based on land to labor to capital to information, each time utilizing a quicker and more scalable resource.
For information based systems, the main constraint is the need to interact with slower resource types. If I could misappropriate cryptocurrency terminology, think of information systems being hampered by the number and types of oracles they need. You can gain a lot from improving these oracles (think of wearables replacing manual entry of health data), but the real revolutions come where we can remove these references to outside systems altogether. Virtually everything involves money, and money is one of the slowest, bureaucratic, and nationally constrained concepts. The real power of cryptocurrencies is that they can store value within an information system, without the need for outside reference. I think this is what makes the concept so interesting. Benefits often cited like reduced government manipulation or ease of cross border transactions are secondary or can only exist because of this main property.
When blockchain technologies mature, I think this will lead to possibilities we can't even imagine now. One day my A.I. may negotiate with and receive binding quotes from other A.I.'s around the world for some service I need, without having to reference anything outside the digital world. Think about how amazing it is that we can actually create scarcity in a digital world where everything can be copied for free. That's truly revolutionary.
On a side note, being intrinsic to the system is also why I think proof-of-stake will be more secure in the long run than proof-of-work. PoW relies on assumptions outside the system - that hashpower will be proportional to energy usage. If we're thinking decades, at some point a government or company could come up with a novel way to significantly speed up hashpower (an ASIC using carbon nanotubes or whatever) and quietly build resources to take down the system. PoS bootstraps its own value within the system, so as long as the network is big enough it should be safer for longer.
We should stop comparing cryptocurrencies to equities
Both on Reddit and in the news I see comparisons of market caps for cryptocurrencies with market caps for companies like Apple, implying present value of fees determines value. Transaction costs and mining/staking fees are a necessary evil but are not where the value of cryptocurrencies come from. If we could create an economically stable decentralized currency without any fees it would certainly be more valuable than the same currency with fees.
Ethereum is positioned to be the dominant cryptocurrency
I hope that the end state for cryptocurrencies will include multiple competing solutions with competition and innovation, but at least for now I think Ethereum is best positioned to be the dominant platform. I like how in many ways Ethereum taking the opposite approach of Bitcoin in terms of being open, ambitious, and flexible while Bitcoin is focused, narrow, and stable (in terms of protocol, not price). If Ethereum's ICO model fails, it might still be successful as collateral for financial transactions, or may become dominant in micropayments in the internet of things. Ethereum is flexible enough to adapt to the unknown risks it will face as it matures. I'm not worried about regulation because not all countries will be so short sighted to shut it down, and the countries that don't will prosper from it. I'm not worried so much about the ICO bubble or other specific issues because not all use cases will fail. The road will be bumpy and there will be multiple >50% price crashes, scams, hacks, and crises, but I think ETH has the people, momentum, and flexibility to ultimately deal with these challenges.
Banks aren't going anywhere
Being able to be your own bank is like saying you can keep cash in a safe in your house. For many technically inclined people on this sub it's definitely better to get a hardware or paper wallet and truly own your crypto. For 98% of the public, they will be better off keeping their account with some trusted company with a password they can reset, two factor authentication, and consumer protections. I don't think that in any way changes the vision for what crypto can do.
Speculators sometimes get lucky
Right now the value of crypto is ridiculously volatile compared to fiat because there are so few use cases and value is determined based on expected uses many years from now. It seems unfair that a group of speculators (us) can get lucky and make crazy returns without contributing much to society, but life isn't fair and there's precedence for this. During the industrial revolution many destitute populations in the middle east because insanely rich just because they happened to possess oil reserves. As smart as we think we are, most of us who have been in more than a month or two are lucky and should have the humility to recognize that.
Theoretically, if all the moontalk comes to pass and ETH is worth $30,000 each and you can purchase any digital good with it, it will be as stable as fiat. For a new ETH user they shouldn't care if ETH is $300 or $30,000 as long as the fiat to crypto conversion rate makes sense. In this scenario a group of speculators makes millions but late adopters don't appear to be hurt, and that can only be because fiat is devalued. Just for this risk I think most serious investors should hold a very small investment in crypto to hedge their exposure to fiat.
The possibility space is wider than people assume
People greatly overestimate their ability to predict the future. With a new concept like crypto, I think the range of possibilities in the near and far term are much wider than people realize. By the end of the year ETH could crash to $1 because of some unforeseen flaw, or it could hit $10,000 as part of a truly global bubble with Elon Musk saying ETH will be the only currency accepted on Mars.
Here's a thought experiment for the absolute maximum you should invest in crypto. You're allowed to wager money on a coin flip. If it's heads you'll be paid out 10x your investment and if it's tails you'll lose it all. How much would you wager? Regardless of how much of an optimistic moon kid you are, don't invest more than this.
